Park and Ocean formerly BG Coco Cafe Outdoor Center, is a short walk from beachside shops and condominiums, this park is an oasis of tropical hammocks-a gift from Hugh Taylor Birch to Florida’s posterity. His former estate preserves four distinct natural communities, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Visitors can rent a canoe and paddle along a mile-long freshwater lagoon or fish from the seawall. It was the first cup I ever drank that captured my imagination. My grandmother invited me (Brandon) over for a visit. What followed was a coffee ceremony. I quickly learned that coffee was not merely a beverage to consume, but a ritual to enjoy. What happened around coffee mattered as much as the coffee itself. Eighteen years ago, when Nicole and I were married, we adopted this ritual. However, it was wildly transformed when we were given a home coffee roaster. Prior to this, neither of us had given much thought to where coffee came from. But, roasting on our own machine sent us on a quest to learn as much about coffee as we could. What followed was a class to Boot Coffee Camp in California, participation in our industry’s annual expos, an origin trip to Colombia and Nicole’s certification as a Q-grader.

My grandfather Max Wolf, emigrated from Germany to New York City in 1936. Of all the possessions he brought over from Germany in that crucial and historic move, the TOP HAT was above all his most cherished one. Max’s TOP HAT made appearances throughout the history of great family occasions, and would again at his wedding to Betty Lowenstein. Now as it so happened, Grandma Betty was a certified knockout. And soon Max and Betty had a son they named Gerhard. Following an impactful family visit to the Statue of Liberty, Max & Betty launched the “Liberty Importing Company,” a purveyor of imported & exported specialty foods. And little Gerhard Wolf dubbed himself “Jerry.” Then Jerry grew up to marry his very bright and beautiful sweetheart Harriet, wearing the same TOP HAT to his wedding that his father wore to marry his mother. In 1965, Jerry and Harriet moved from New York to Miami where they built a food distribution business they called Monel (for their children Monica and Elliot.) Jerry wore the TOP HAT on one more occasion…at my wedding to Melinda. This place is excellent. They just wanted to produce excellent Italian food, which they do (IMO) better than most of the other Italian restaurants around…and there are a TON of Italian restaurants around! This is a true small business that should be patronized not just because it’s a small business, but because it’s an excellent “ma and pa” type place that puts out a far superior product than the big-name spots. Make a reservation, it’s small. It’s a deli/market with an excellent kitchen and limited seating. You will experience fresh pasta, perfect portions, fresh seafood, wonderfully braised meats, homemade desserts, excellent and fresh flavors, and great service as the two owners are present and on the floor. The menu is simply explained, and you can tell they love sharing their creations with all of us in how they treat and interact with all of their guests.

Louie Bossi is not your typical chef. Growing up in an Italian household in New York he remembers the aromas of roasted garlic and fresh meatballs sizzling from his family’s kitchen. Raised by a single mother juggling three jobs, Bossi taught himself to cook at the age of eight. Working his way from dishwasher to cook at the local pizzeria Bossi developed a love for the art of pizza making. Relocating to Florida in 2000, Bossi landed his first job with Big Time Restaurant Group as grill cook. Exploring different positions within their popular portfolio of restaurants Chef Bossi proved to be one of the hardest working and most inspired chefs in the company, which earned him the coveted Executive Chef position at Big City Tavern. Bossi’s D.I.Y. approach has led him to obtain a certification from Chef Brian Polcyn in the ancient art and technique of charcuterie, as well as becoming a Master Pizza Maker from The Scuola Italiana Pizzaoili in San Francisco.The Chimney House aims to showcase the best dishes and food of South America and Spain like Ceviches, Arroz Marinero (similar to a Paella), Churrasco Chimichurri, Grilled Skirt Steak, and lighter fare like Empanadas, Fish and Steak Tacos, and the House Steak Sandwich.
